What to Expect in Your First Class at SBG Scarborough
Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time is a moment most people never forget. There’s a mix of excitement, nerves, curiosity, and that quiet hope that maybe — just maybe — this could be the start of something meaningful. At SBG Scarborough, we understand that feeling deeply. Every coach here remembers their own first class, whether it was BJJ or Muay Thai, and the uncertainty of stepping onto the mats for the very first time. We remember the questions, the awkwardness, the fear of not knowing what to do — and the relief of being welcomed by someone who genuinely cared.
That’s why we’ve built our entire beginner experience around one simple idea: no one starts alone.
No one starts alone at SBG Scarborough — your coach is with you from the moment you walk in.
Your journey begins long before you ever throw a punch or learn your first escape. It starts the moment you sign up for a free trial class on our website. It’s a small action, but a powerful one — a decision to try something new, to challenge yourself, to step into a space where growth is possible. Once you register, we prepare for you personally. A coach is assigned to greet you, meet you, and guide you through your very first steps.
When you walk through our doors, you won’t be left scanning the room wondering where to go or who to talk to. Your coach will be there waiting — someone who already knows your name, your goals, and why you decided to try BJJ or Muay Thai in the first place. They’ll show you around, introduce you to the space, and help you settle in. There’s no rush, no pressure, no expectation that you should already know anything. You’re not supposed to. That’s why you’re here.
You don’t need experience, fitness, or confidence. You just need the courage to show up.
Your first class will be one of our Foundation classes, designed specifically for beginners in both BJJ and Muay Thai. These classes are the heart of our program — structured, safe, and welcoming. You’ll be training alongside regular students, but everything is taught with beginners in mind. You’ll learn the basics slowly and clearly, with time to ask questions and space to go at your own pace. You don’t need to be fit, flexible, or experienced. You don’t need to “get in shape first.” You don’t need to know the terminology. You don’t need to be confident. You just need to show up.
Throughout the entire class, your coach stays with you. They’ll help you with the warm‑up, guide you through the technique of the day, and make sure you’re partnered with someone who will support you. If you’re unsure about a movement, they’ll walk you through it. If you feel nervous, they’ll help you settle in. If you’re excited, they’ll match your energy. You’re never left guessing what to do — you’re learning with someone right beside you.
And then something interesting happens. Somewhere between the first drill and the last technique, the nerves start to fade. You begin to understand the rhythm of the class. You start to feel the support of the people around you. You realize that everyone here — from the white belts to the black belts, from the day‑one Muay Thai students to the seasoned strikers — wants you to succeed. You start to feel like you belong.
You’re not expected to know anything. You’re here to learn, and we’re here to teach.
After class, your coach or a staff member will sit down with you and explain how our memberships work. Not with pressure or sales tactics, but with clarity. We want you to understand your options, your schedule, and how training can fit into your life. Whether you’re looking for fitness, self‑defense, confidence, or a new community, we help you choose the path that makes sense for you.
Most people leave their first class surprised by how comfortable they felt. They expected intensity, but found encouragement. They expected to feel lost, but found guidance. They expected to feel out of place, but found a community that welcomed them immediately.
That’s the experience we want every new student to have. A first step that feels safe. A class that feels achievable. A coach who feels like a partner in your journey. A gym that feels like home.
If you’ve been thinking about trying BJJ or Muay Thai — whether for yourself or your child — your first class at SBG Scarborough is designed to make that step easier than you think. You don’t need experience. You don’t need to be in shape. You don’t need to know anything at all. You just need the willingness to walk through the door.
We’ll take care of the rest.
